About "Pacuare Lodge"

Getting to this exquisite eco-lodge is half the adventure, since you arrive and depart as part of a multi-day rafting tour on the Pacuare River. The luxuriant rainforest that surrounds the Pacuare Lodge is a private reserve that forms part of the largest network of protected areas in Central America, covering more than 1.2 million acres of tropical wilderness.

Guests have the opportunity to experience an unforgettable meal in the Nest: a platform 60 feet above the jungle floor in the branches of century-old Kapok tree - considered a sacred tree by the ancient Mayans. All of the staff at the Pacuare Lodge are from local communities, and the friendly, casual atmosphere has been cited by guests as one of the most pleasant aspects of their stay.

Do not take our word for it, have a look at the lodge's guest book. Then come experience what everybody raves about!

Things to Do

Ancient Trail and Hidden Waterfall Hike

This is the most challenging of our hikes, making it a good option for people who enjoy hiking into remote and wild areas. Departing from the Pacuare Lodge, it begins with a steep hike through the jungle to reach the legendary sendero de las mulas (mule trial), which is one of the main routes used by the Cabécar Indians to travel longer distances and has been used for generations. After the first climb, we’ll take the jabas trail, which includes a series of switchbacks, to the ‘path of puma.’ This will take us to the ancient mule trail, which we’ll follow deep into the Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to reach the highpoint of this excursion: the hidden waterfall. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at this scenic spot before hiking back along the trail to a Cabécar indigenous community. After exploring that traditional village, we’ll continue down another rainforest trail back to the Pacuare Lodge.

Cabecar Indigenous Hike

The Talamanca Mountains are host to the Cabecar natives, the largest indigenous group in Costa Rica, and one that retains many of its traditional customs and beliefs. The experience to walk to these family clans is a challenge due to the difficult conditions of the trails; nevertheless, the trail offers a wonderful opportunity to discover many secrets of the forest, interact with the ecosystem, and hike the same trails the Cabecar´s have for centuries. After visiting with a Cabecar family, we will begin our trek back down to the lodge.

Canopy Adventure

This is an experience like no other! You will face the exotic beauty of the rainforest head on, feeling the adrenaline of dramatic views, rappelling down towering trees and sliding along cables from tree to tree as you descend the jungle-cloaked mountain toward the Pacuare Lodge for a final thrilling rappel that leaves you just steps away from our main lodge! You will experience this excitement secure in the knowledge that you are safely anchored with a safety harness, providing a unique experience that no other tour of this type offers. Two hours of unforgettable adventure in the tree tops!

Canyoning

El Tesorito Creek flows out of the mountains behind the Pacuare Lodge into a narrow gorge in the midst of the rainforest. We’ve created a fun outdoor adventure in that luxuriant canyon that includes rock climbing, a descent down a small a waterfall, sliding along cables, swinging through the jungle like Tarzan, and rappelling down a 30-meter (90-foot) rock face. The result is a light but exhilarating adventure in an idyllic, natural setting that is not to be missed.

White water rafting

Wild and untamed, the Pacuare River plunges through spectacularly beautiful, largely unexplored tropical wilderness as it winds deep inside one of Costa Rica's most impressive primordial rainforests. You will traverse 20 miles of remote and scenic waters that course through a wilderness of dense vegetation covering the sides of steep gorges that rise above the riverbanks. The thick undergrowth provides shelter for jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloth, and numerous other species of animals and birds. You'll break for a delicious lunch served along the river's edge by your guides. While lunch is being prepared, you'll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as you marvel at the raw, pounding power of the untamed Pacuare River that for millions of years has coursed through this virgin tropical rainforest.
